Matt launched his career into professional motor racing after winning the inaugural Silverstone Racing School Scholarship. Held at Silverstone in 2003 the scholarship came with the prize of a full season's racing in the BRDC Formula Ford Championship. His first year in car racing came off the back of an impressive 10- year Kart Racing career in which he won the National S2 Karting Championship in 2002.
Since then Matt never looked back. He was crowned BRDC Formula Ford Champion in 2004 before stepping up to Formula Renault UK the following season. In 2005 BRDC Young Rising Star status was achieved along with Motorsport News ‘Best Newcomer’ before moving on to test for LOLA in Formula 3. From 2006 Matt was runner-up when he raced in China and the States before returning to the Formula Renault BARC series with more podium success and an early championship lead. 2009 saw a return to Formula Ford 1600 for invitation races and a Class 3rd place in the championship.
